[tps_header]One of my favorite things about our generation is men’s new found dedication to fashion and grooming. We have come a long way from shapeless dad jeans and worn out football jerseys – don’t get me wrong those can be adorable, but men these days are blowing our minds away with their carefully side-swept hair, their swoon-worthy color coordination, and well-cared for beards. They are more inclined to go for products and style with the highest quality while at the same time allowing self-expression. And for that, we thank goods curators like Finch Goods Co.
Finch Goods is a Canadian company that curates the best in Men’s products. The founder, Richard Lazzazera travels all over the world to find the best items for the boys. From wallets to socks to beard oils, Finch Goods has got you covered. This man knows style.
We sit down for a chat with Richard to get a more in depth view of the company.
S: How are you? I heard you just came back from a Finch Goods Co. related – Italian excursion?
R: It was a half business/half pleasure trip. We went to Milan, Venice, Germany, and Paris. We found great finds that we will be featuring on Finch Goods in the coming months.
S: I know that FG sprouted from your first entrepreneurship experience when you were younger. What is your vision for FG?
R: I learned from a young age that it’s usually better to spend more on the right product that’s designed and built well vs. buying the cheapest product or the first product that fulfills your needs. I want Finch Goods to feel like your best friend that always knows the best products for you.
S: As a goods curator, what catches your eye and why?
R: The difference is that our focus isn’t to follow trends or fads. We curate, test, and source the best made, quality products from around the world. There’s a few things we look for in products: design, build quality, material quality, and a story. The story can come from the product itself or sometimes from the craftsmen who make it.
S: You travel extensively to find the best items, which destination really inspired you?
R: The internet is great for sourcing products, but nothing beats travelling to new countries to discover new products, meeting new people and learning their stories. Germany is one place we have only been briefly but inspired us the most.
S: In the past, there was a stigma against men taking care of their skin, dressing better, etc. Was that something you intended for FG to counteract?
R: Our mantra is to help men realize the importance of taking time to reconsider the small decisions they subconsciously make everyday. For example, most men will buy the same aerosol shaving gel from puberty till they die. At some point when they started shaving, they made a decision on a brand or type of product to go with and they never ever think about that decision again. The problem is, they likely made that decision because it was on sale or convenient, not because it’s actually a great product.
So to answer your questions, we aren’t trying to counter a stigma, we are trying to counter poor product purchasing decisions.
S: Currently, what is your favorite item in the FG collection?
R: We are huge fans of Bison Made wallets. They are well built wallets made from some of the finest leather that comes directly from the Horween Leather Tannery in Chicago. They have been tanning leather the same way, using a traditional recipe for over 100 years.
S: What do you think sets FG apart from all the other curated lines?
R: Many other men’s curation sites focus on ultra high end products where high prices cover big marketing budgets of big brands, not product and material quality.
S: Is there a men’s wear trend that you predict will catch on in 2015?
R: We don’t focus too much on fashion, but bold colourful socks will be a winner again in 2015 for sure. Furthermore, although not a fashion trend, the beard trend is stronger than ever. We can’t keep our beard care products in stock right now.
S: Will you ever curate for women’s wear? Because I’m getting jealous.
R: I think the men’s market will keep ups busy for a while 😉
Thanks so much Richard for tolerating us and also for helping men all over look dashing. We can’t wait to see the new line for 2015!
And because I can’t help myself, here are our fave picks from the current Finch Goods Co. line.
